Ophelia
Diagnosed HIV positive in 1991 — a death sentence. Then she spent 30 years giving back.
OPHELIA is a narrative feature film that tells the true story of Ophelia Haanyama Orum, a Zambian woman diagnosed HIV positive in Stockholm, Sweden in 1991 — at a time when the diagnosis was a death sentence. Against impossible odds, she survived, raised two HIV-negative children, and transformed from a woman hiding her status in secrecy into a globally recognized advocate, speaking before the Swedish Parliament and on international stages alongside figures like Bill Clinton and Richard Branson.
Spanning four decades and four countries — Zambia, Sweden, France, and Canada — OPHELIA weaves together one woman’s personal journey of survival and courage with the real scientific breakthroughs that saved her life. The film opens and closes in 2025, as Ophelia watches the very systems that once saved her be dismantled, transforming her story from history into an urgent warning for today. At its heart, OPHELIA is a story about resilience, dignity, and what it means to find your voice — and use it to carry the stories of those who have none.
