A cross-border investigation into two journalists’ killings reveals how impunity shields the powerful and challenges those demanding justice. In Mexico, more than 95 percent of journalist murders go unpunished. In 2022, Tijuana reporters Margarito Martínez Esquivel and Lourdes Maldonado López were killed within days of each other. Their deaths sparked outrage—then a familiar silence. The Historical Truth investigates why justice remains elusive and how impunity now stretches across the U.S.–Mexico border.
Following a cross-border team of journalists the film traces connections between the killings and a broader network of political and criminal interests operating from Baja California into the United States. Reporting reveals alleged ties between Baja political figures and a San Diego real estate money-laundering scheme—some linked to officials in power when the murders occurred.
Through vérité storytelling and investigative reporting, the film exposes how corruption, power, and hostility toward the press threaten democracy on both sides of the border—and why the demand for justice refuses to disappear.
