Ndingumntu Nam Self Care Fair

Ndingumntu Nam is a mental health awareness campaign; the first step to seeking mental wellness and mental health information. We curated the self-care event in means of trying to create a sage space for individuals. We feel that people generally struggle with their mental health and becaue of hte implications of Covid-19 more people are now experiencing depression, anxiety, and cabin fever. The idea is to have various stalls where individuals can learn about self-care planning and mental health in general. The stalls focus on affirmations, journaling, spiritual nourishment, resources available to individuals worldwide (e.g. gbv, suicide and anxiety helplines), and a coloring section just to mention a few.

Ndingumntu Nam Self Care Fair’s aims to inspire the people of Africa by focusing on raising mental health awareness in black and brown communities, as they believe that this is where education on the matter is needed most. They began by finding words of mental illness in African languages because of the widespread denialism of the issue in our communities e.g. ungxunguphalo – depression, ungxunguphalo olundlela mbini – bipolar, ukukhula kwesimilo – growth in personality.

The goal is to educate people through events like a self care fair – a space created for individuals to learn of the various methods they can adopt to improve their mental health e.g. journaling stalls where journals are given away, music stalls where people are educated about how different music affects your mood, etc. Ndingumntu Nam Self Care Fair’s goal is to have a wellness center where they provide holistic health service and education on mental health. They believe their work will be a great benefit to their community as they would be creating job opportunities, education and empowering the youth of Africa.
