Memoir of life with Elizabeth, testifying to the devastation of mental illness/addiction, and the urgent need to create a better, more accepting world for everyone. This nonfiction book is based on the author’s 16-year relationship with a warm, witty, and brilliant woman who was working on her Ph.D. when she lost her way and spiraled. People were “crazy drawn” to Elizabeth because she was unlike anyone they had known—highly creative, unfailingly kind, hilariously funny, and known for her daring antics and rebellious nature, as well as her intellectual achievement. But underneath, she was haunted and fragmented, and self-medicated her pain. Part personal journey and part cultural reflection of the opioid epidemic, LOVING ELIZABETH looks at the emotional inheritance that binds generations together—the strengths families cultivate, the struggles they endure, and the ways individuals strive to understand the past to move forward. Tender, raucous, and wrenchingly sad, the story infuses empathy for each other’s well-being and mental health to foster a deeper understanding of family legacy and the unseen forces that shape individual lives.
