Hidden Figures of Silicon Valley

Behind Jobs, Gates, and Wozniak stood nine women who revolutionized classrooms, built tech giants and raised a generation on Sesame Street, Oregon Trail and Reader Rabbit — and they’re still best friends 40+ years later.

CAUSE: Human Rights & Civil Liberties
CATEGORY: Film/Video
PROJECT DIRECTOR: Philip Hall

Directed by Emmy Award winning filmmaker, Sarah Anthony, this documentary centers around nine “hidden figures” of Silicon Valley — a group of tech trailblazers and best friends who, in the late 1970s, built the Educational Technology industry from scratch. If you remember The Oregon Trail, Reader Rabbit, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, or the encyclopedia on CD-ROM, you have these women to thank. They kept the lights on at Apple, IBM and Microsoft and shepherded a generation into the digital age with innovative curricula, teacher training and federal legislation. And with the sudden arrival of AI in today’s classrooms and outcry against ‘screen time,’ sharing their legacy and the impact they had on public education feels incredibly timely. This feels especially relevant if we hope to learn from our past and determine what’s best for education in the AI future.
