Elman Peace (wt)
Two young Somalis are granted a second chance at life after their childhoods were devastated by the traumatic events of their country’s civil war.
Elman Peace (WT) is a film that takes us into the lives of one young Somali boy and one girl who were given a chance to heal from the tragic events of growing up immersed in civil war.
The war in Somalia is a decades long conflict driven by clan militias, Islamist extremist groups, and government forces all vying for control of the country. The consequences have been catastrophic, with widespread displacement, poverty, and suffering affecting millions of Somalis. Among children, thousands of boys have been recruited as child soldiers, girls made victims of sexual violence, and all deprived of education and the innocence of youth.
Our two characters’ lives were forever changed when they were taken in by Elman Peace—an organization led by one charismatic young Somali woman and her mother that helps children heal from devastating trauma and prepares them to live successful lives. Along with basic education and trade skills, Elman creates space for them to experience vulnerability and play—crucial elements of any childhood that are fleeting for those who have grown up amidst war.
