Markegard
Doniga Markegard, a regenerative rancher and land steward will travel to Mongolia to compete in the longest and toughest horse race in the world, the Mongol Derby. She will utilize her participation in this race to raise awareness of the importance of nomadic herders staying on the land, tending to the grasslands. Much of the planet at one time was grasslands which has been declining due to overgrazing, urbanization and changing climate. Now is the time to reverse those impacts on Mongolian grasslands. The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of rangelands and pastoralists with Mongolia as one of the focal areas. By immersing in the culture of the Mongolian herders, this project will set out to document the stories of the people caring for their home and seek to understand the significant role they play in the regeneration of the world's last tract of intact temperate grasslands.
