CAUSE: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Education, Community Empowerment, Racial Justice, Youth Empowerment

CATEGORY: Film, Multimedia, Video

PROJECT DIRECTOR: Yaba Baker

Dave the Potter documentary brings his story of artistry and resistance to people around the world. The documentary highlights the trials and triumphs in Dave’s life and explains how an enslaved man created pots for everyday use in the 1800s that later became sought-after artwork worth millions of dollars 175 years later. It also explores how his act of resistance to oppressive laws against literacy for slaves—by signing his name on his pots—helped his artwork reach his descendants almost two centuries later.
The animated series will tell the story of Kindra and Deloren as they travel back in time and meet their ancestor, Dave the Potter. Kindra, Deloren, and Dave are swept into a time-travel adventure through time and space that highlights Black History facts across six centuries.
