Porchlight Project

A 5,000-mile field study of America's gathering places and the decline of in-person community life.

CAUSE: Community Resilience & Economic Opportunity, Health & Well-being
CATEGORY: Multimedia
PROJECT DIRECTOR: Austin Hickle

The Porchlight Project is a seven-month, 5,000-mile bicycle journey across America to document the decline of in-person gathering and its consequences for community life. Traveling from California to Maine through 27 states, founder Austin Hickle will systematically study approximately 500 gathering places, including diners, libraries, parks, churches, and civic organizations.

Combining ethnographic field research, more than 1,000 interviews, documentary photography, and narrative journalism, Porchlight will produce a public research archive, published articles, photographic exhibitions, and an eventual book. The project seeks to make the erosion of American community visible and illuminate the conditions that allow gathering places to thrive or disappear.
