That’s Why Mums Go to Switzerland-EXPEDITED FEE

A devastating and hilarious one-woman play about three generations of pissed-off women living together under one roof, ending with a trip to Dignitas.

CAUSE: Health & Well-being

PROJECT DIRECTOR: Michelle Toth

“That’s Why Mums Go to Switzerland” is a solo play that begins with a middle-aged woman sheepishly offering to her recently bereaved mother: “We’ll move in with you, if you like” (Thinking she’ll refuse. She doesn’t.)
What follows is a raw, darkly funny look at a family in chaos. As the middle-aged woman hangs up her laundry, we follow a marriage breakdown, teenage upheaval, dependency, love (“whatever that is”), an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, a matriarch loudly preparing for an illegal trip to Switzerland, and the joys of becoming “a bad mother and a bad daughter at the very same time”…Plus the dog, who knew everything, because dogs always know everything.
Amidst the current debate around assisted dying in the UK, this work offers a conversation catalyst that is free from the binary. An emotionally intelligent and blazing performance, “That’s Why Mums go to Switzerland” is an exploration of how assisted dying exists within modern family dynamics.
