Take Me Out Feet First

Take Me Out Feet First is a documentary series that follows the director's own mother when she chooses to end her life under the California End of Life Option Act and other celebrations of the Right to Choose Medical Aid in Dying.

CAUSE: Health & Well-being
CATEGORY: Film/Video
PROJECT DIRECTOR: Serene Meshel-Dillman

TAKE ME OUT FEET FIRST is a documentary series exploring medical aid in dying through the intimate stories of terminally ill people and their families. Created and directed by Serene Meshel-Dillman, the series began with the deeply personal story of her own parents, both of whom chose medical aid in dying under California’s End of Life Option Act.
Season 1 follows people across the United States confronting terminal illness—some living in states where medical aid in dying is legal and others where it is not—as they share their experiences, their advocacy, and their desire to have a voice in how their lives end. The season reached millions of viewers and remained among Amazon Prime’s Top 5 programs for seven months in 2024. The complete first season is now streaming on YouTube, making these stories freely accessible to an even broader audience.

At its heart, TAKE ME OUT FEET FIRST is about choice, autonomy, and what it means to live fully while facing the end of life. Through remarkably candid stories filled not only with difficult decisions, but also humor, love, friendship, and unexpected joy, the series reveals the relief and peace that can come from having a voice in how one’s life ends.
Season 2 is currently in production and scheduled for release in 2027, continuing the series with new stories and perspectives from people confronting terminal illness and end-of-life choices.
