American Hibakusha
The untold stories of the last remaining Japanese-American atomic bomb survivors.
On August 6th 1945, the United States dropped the first of two atomic
bombs over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, it would drop
the second on the city of Nagasaki. It is estimated that upwards of 240,000
people were killed, with immeasurable damage inflicted on those who
survived. The bombings remain the only uses of nuclear weapons during an
armed conflict in history.
80 years after the bombings, few survivors remain, and of those, most are
not willing or able to recount their experiences of that time.
American Hibakusha tells the stories of the last Japanese-American survivors
of the atomic bomings, bearing witness to their experiences of returning to
and living in the United States after surviving the bombs as young children
in Japan. We learn about how they grapple with their dual identities, the
stigma of being “Hibakusha”, and the burden of remembrance.
