THE SEVEN TIMES’ BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS DOCUSERIES

The Seven Times produces a docuseries that celebrates the resilience of local Black entrepreneurs.

CAUSE: Community Resilience & Economic Opportunity, Human Rights & Civil Liberties
CATEGORY: Film/Video
PROJECT DIRECTOR: Nikolas Heftman

The Seven Times is a short-form docuseries spotlighting the entrepreneurs building Black wealth and community. The series takes its name from the local multiplier effect: When you spend money at an independent, locally owned business, your dollars roll over seven times in the community. Each episode travels to a different city to profile a local, Black-owned brick-and-mortar business, weaving together the owner’s personal origin story with a portrait of the neighborhood, networks, and resources that helped make their vision possible.

From a ceramics sanctuary in Minneapolis to a mobile donut shop in Saint Paul, a comedy platform that doubled as an autism advocacy engine, and a dive center in Des Moines that defied every stereotype about who gets to swim, The Seven Times finds the unexpected corners of American entrepreneurship and tells those stories with depth. Many of the businesses in the series do not have the resources available to share their stories. The Seven Times steps in to help with that effort. We plan to develop an entrepreneurship curriculum based on this series, too.
