Maasai Jewelry
These bracelets are made by the women of the same Maasai community that Dan visited as a teenager – where he was first inspired to help to raise money for those less fortunate. Because of his frequent visits, he was eventually adopted into Maasai family. His Maasai brother, Peter, helps us purchase the bracelets from his Maasai mother and her friends – and sends them to us. We believe in fair trade practices, and therefore pay high market value for the jewelry.
Traditionally, the women of the Maasai tribe would bead bracelets, necklaces, and other ornaments to present as gifts to the men of the village before they herded their livestock to distant locations for months at a time. Additionally, they were exchanged between close friends in neighboring communities. The exchange of these gifts was a token of love and remembrance during this lonely period of separation. Over time, the use and meaning of these ornaments expanded, and the Maasai women began to use their craft for a commercial means to provide for their families.
As society changes around them, the Maasai people balance their changing world with the traditions that preserve their cultural values.
