Jennifer Arnold – A Small Act & Hilde Back Education Fund

The Hilde Back Education Fund, (HBEF) is a charitable community-based organization that assists children from poor families complete primary and secondary school education in Kenya.

Based in Githunguri, in Central Province, this unique project is led by successful Kenyan professionals, some of whom were once needy when a sponsor reached out to transform their lives by paying their school fees.

Having attained success through education, these professionals are positively transforming their communities through supporting the next generation. The kids being sponsored currently, in their turn, are expected to sponsor the education of the next generation.

The HBEF project is the subject of a US documentary film A Small Act which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2010 and has been selected for other international film festivals around the world. The film traces the lives and times of three generations- the story of a Swedish school teacher (Hilde Back) who sent a couple of dollars in the 70s to support Chris Mburu. The then poor but highly bright Chris is now an accomplished international Human Rights lawyer, who founded HBEF in 2001 to support the education of kids in his community. CVF Involvement: 

Creative Visions Foundation (CVF) provides all business services including fiscal sponsorship and donor reports for The Hilde Back Education Fund (HBEF). CVF supported HBEF in the attendance of A Small Act at Sundance Film Festival (January, 2010) and continues to assist in the marketing of the film.  CVF also traveled to Kenya and produced a promo video for HBEF.
